Superintendent Skelly's Guest Column: The Power of Language and Identity

Head shot of Superintendent Skelly"A few months ago, I attended the San Mateo City Council study session where the council discussed and heard comments on a proposed resolution to support residents who lack citizenship documentation. There were multiple speakers, including many nervous high school students who spoke in favor of the resolution and opponents who spoke against it. The young people shared their stories of coming to San Mateo County to escape crime, economic collapse in their homeland and to be with their parents and relatives. Despite being able to communicate effectively in English, the students chose to speak in Spanish. While their arguments resonated with me, I found myself wishing the students had shared their considerable English skills; it somehow felt like it took something away from their points..."
